Professor of Neuroscience and Director of the Brain Institute at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). Received a Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Brasilia (1993), a Master's Degree in Biophysics from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1994), a PhD in Animal Behavior from the Rockefeller University (2000), and completed post-doctoral studies in Neurophysiology at Duke University (2005), with a grant from the Pew Latin American Fellows Program in the Biomedical Sciences. Has experience in the areas of neuroethology, molecular neurobiology and systems neurophysiology, mainly in the following topics: Sleep, dreams and memory, neuronal plasticity; vocal communication; symbolic competence in non-human animals and neuroeducation. Acted as secretary of the Brazilian Society for Neuroscience and Behavior from 2009-2011. Currently coordinates the Brazilian committee of the Pew Latin American Fellows Program in the Biomedical Sciences, and integrates the steering committee of the Latin American School of Education, Cognitive and Neural Sciences.

Este laboratório investiga os mecanismos moleculares, celulares e psicológicos responsáveis pelo papel cognitivo do sono. Memórias explícitas, como por exemplo, memórias de lugares, coisas e eventos, envolvem duas diferentes porções cerebrais: enquanto o hipocampo age como um armazenador de curto-prazo, as memórias com o tempo migram completamente para o córtex cerebral. Investigando ratos através de registros neuronais de multi-eletrodos e hibridização in situ para genes imediatos relacionados à plasticidade, fez-se a descoberta de que memórias de objetos novos no hipocampo desaparecem em questão de minutos, mas persistem reverberando no córtex durante o sono por várias horas após o fim da exploração do objeto. Os resultados indicam que as duas fases do sono cooperam para promover a propagação de memórias desde seu ponto de entrada (hipocampo) até seu destino final (córtex). A fase sem sonhos do sono (sono de ondas lentas) reverbera e amplifica mudanças recentemente adquiridas em circuitos sinápticos selecionados. A fase onírica do sono (movimento rápido dos olhos, sono REM) dispara a expressão cortical de genes relacionados à estabilização e propagação da memória. Os resultados sugerem que experiências novas são seguidas por múltiplas ondas de plasticidade cortical enquanto os ciclos do sono se sucedem. Como consequência, as memórias tornam-se mais dependentes do córtex que do hipocampo à medida que o sono transcorre, migrando dos circuitos de entrada originais para redes corticais mais profundas. O objetivo atual deste laboratório é elucidar como as interações córtico-hipocampais e a plasticidade sináptica dependente de experiência durante o sono contribuem para a consolidação de memórias em roedores. Em paralelo, são utilizados eletroencefalografia, jogos de vídeo-game e relatos de sonhos para investigar o valor adaptativo dos sonhos em humanos.

Uma segunda linha de pesquisa neste laboratório diz respeito à comunicação vocal e competência simbólica em animais não-humanos. O foco é o sagui (Callithrix jacchus), uma espécie bastante vocal de macaco do novo-mundo. Atualmente o laboratório dedica-se ao estudo etológico do repertório vocal do sagui, e também ao mapeamento, por meio da expressão de genes imediatos dependentes de cálcio, das áreas e vias cerebrais relacionadas à audição e produção das vocalizações.
